Pełna uroku Lipa potrafi każdemu zawrócić w głowie. Spokojna, dyskretna, a nawet trochę lękliwa, choć potrafi przystosować się do każdych warunków, to marzy o wygodzie i stabilizacji. Pełna sprzeczności i niestała Lipa jest zdecydowanie sympatyczna i nie stara się naprawiać swoich bliźnich. Jest lubiana nawet wtedy, gdy nie można na niej zbytnio polegać. W miłości bywa bardzo zazdrosna. Jeśli znajdzie bratnią duszę, odzyskuje równowagę. Ma zmysł praktyczny i zdolności techniczne. Pomysłowa i precyzyjna. Żyje długo i nie nękają jej choroby.

The recipe indeed is quite simple. You mix elements of adventure, history with science-fiction and the rest is up to your imagination. And one cannot disagree with the statement that Frank Herbert HAD the imagination. The precision of his mind, the story-telling and attention to detail is impressive. Not only did he create the planet with its odd ecology but he also managed to create a very interesting and precise world with its rich in detail social, philosophical and magical connections. Everything is logical and simply fits.

Dune is not about battles, star wars, adrenaline-pumping bloodcurdling situations. Everything is kept in balance and as in a great meal mixed in best proportions. Herbert as the master chef leaves the reader with space for own interpretation, imagination, for asking questions. And one that does that while reading Dune won’t regret it. In fact the massive universe of Dune leaves its competitors far behind, with only Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings being able to compete with Herbert’s masterpiece.

What took my attention is the fascination in the East and mythology. That’s pretty obvious - the world of Dune reminds of the regions where Islam was born. The Fremen are similar to Beduin or Tuarg. Words such as Fedayinn, Jihad, Sietch, Padishach, siridar and many more are taken from the Arab world. Even the story of Muad’Dib is in many ways similar to the story of Mohammed. The name Atreides is also symbolic, taken from the Greek mythology and legend of Agamemnon and the curse of Atreides. As Herbert admits in “Frank Herbert” by Tim O’reilly - he wanted a sense of monumental aristocracy but with tragedy hanging over them.

In the Chronicles, the technological West mixes with traditionalist and magical East and the effect is stunning! The story “lives”, and the reader becomes a part of it. In fact it is not some Paul Atreides that becomes Muad’Dib and Kwisatz Haderach. It is not some Leto II Atreides that becomes the tyrant. It is not Sheeanah that controls the Shai’ulud. It is the reader himself.

And that is the reason, when I put Dune: Chapterhouse, the last of the Chronicles of Dune back on the shelf, I understood why Frank Herbert received two of the most renowned awards in the SF literature world - Nebula and Hugo. The Chronicles of Dune is something that cannot be left unread and is something that has stimulated minds of its readers for decades, and will still do it for decades to come.
